Ragamala Dance gets jazzed in new party collaboration

Ragamala Dance, led by the mother-daughter group of Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy, never ever has shied far from checking out brand new methods to perform the ancient dance that is indian of bharatanatyam. “Song for the Jasmine,” which premiered Thursday night at Walker Art Center, can be their many audacious experiment to date. Produced in collaboration with composer Rudresh Mahanthappa, an alto saxophone player whom combines modern jazz with South Indian traditional music, the task challenges us to re-imagine the part of tradition within the century that is 21st. It is disorienting once the stately dancers first encounter the lively rhythms that are circular by Mahanthappa and their ensemble. The interior pulses of each type appear incompatible.

But this initial doubt makes feeling — sometimes we truly need a second to modify objectives from the familiar to one thing groundbreaking. That’s once the miracle of “Song associated with the Jasmine” reveals itself — the partnership amongst the music and dance in this work is not merely supposed to be, it exemplifies what goes on whenever boundaries that are artisticgenuine or synthetic) are radically tested, if you don’t knocked straight straight down altogether.
